If you’ve ever wondered what makes Ash Street Housing Cooperative different from other housing communities, you’re not alone. At first glance, it might look like a quiet neighborhood of beautiful townhomes—but behind those doors is a unique structure that blends the stability of homeownership with the simplicity of maintenance-free living.

This month, we’re taking you behind the scenes to explore how Ash Street really works, from ownership and decision-making to day-to-day operations. Whether you’re a long-time member or someone curious about joining, you’ll discover why cooperative living just makes sense.

You Don’t Just Live Here—You Own a Share of the Community

When you become a member of Ash Street, you’re not just buying a home, you’re buying one share in the cooperative corporation. That share gives you the right to live in your specific unit and, more importantly, a voice in how the community operates.

Unlike a traditional homeowner who holds a deed, each member at Ash Street holds a Membership Certificate (or share of stock) in the cooperative. The cooperative itself owns the property and holds the mortgage, while your monthly “carrying charges” contribute to shared expenses like maintenance, taxes, and insurance.

It’s a system designed for stability: no 30-year mortgages, no surprise repair bills, and no dealing with outside landlords. Just real ownership, simplified.

Your Monthly Carrying Charges Work Smarter Than Rent

If you’ve ever rented, you know how frustrating it can be to pay monthly rent that never builds equity. At Ash Street, your monthly carrying charge covers the costs of maintaining the property, paying down the cooperative mortgage, and keeping everything running smoothly, all while you maintain your share of ownership.

Because everyone pays a proportionate share based on the cooperative’s overall expenses, the cost stays affordable and predictable. And since Ash Street is a nonprofit, no one’s trying to make a profit from your housing, it’s all about sustainability and fairness.

Maintenance Made Easy

Here’s one of the biggest perks of cooperative living: you’re not responsible for major repairs.

At Ash Street, the cooperative handles the building exteriors, HVAC systems, plumbing, wiring, and hot water heaters. So, if your A/C stops working or your water heater gives out, all you have to do is call the office and maintenance will take care of it during regular business hours. And for those after-hours surprises, 24/7 emergency service is just a phone call away.

That peace of mind is priceless. You get to focus on enjoying your home and living your life, not managing repair quotes or scheduling contractors.

Members Have a Real Voice in Decisions

Every member of Ash Street has one vote, an equal say in how the cooperative operates. Members elect a Board of Directors at the Annual Membership Meeting each year, and that board sets policies, creates rules, and makes decisions about how money is spent.

This isn’t like a typical landlord-tenant relationship or even a condo association where a few people make all the decisions. It’s democratic homeownership, where members shape their own community together.

Want to be more involved? You can even join a committee or run for a board position yourself. Cooperative living thrives on the input, ideas, and participation of its members.

Your Home, Your Style

While the cooperative takes care of the major systems and exterior upkeep, the inside of your home is all yours to personalize. You can decorate, paint, and furnish your space to fit your taste.

If you’d like to make improvements—such as updating flooring or fixtures—you simply submit an Improvement Form to the board for approval. This ensures that all changes align with building codes and community standards, while still allowing plenty of freedom for creativity and comfort.

And when it’s time to move, your Membership Certificate (your share) can be sold directly to a new member, allowing you to recoup the value of your home improvements.

A Self-Governing Community that Feels Like Home

Ash Street Cooperative operates a little like a business, but it feels like a family. Because members collectively own the community, decisions are made with care and accountability. While there is an outside management company, there are also onsite, full-time staff that feel like neighbors working together to keep the community thriving.

The co-op also takes care of landscaping, lawns, and trees, so you can enjoy the beauty of a well-maintained neighborhood without having to mow, rake, or shovel. Many members choose to add their own flowerbeds or planters, creating a personal touch while contributing to the overall charm of the community.

A Smarter Way to Call a Place Home

Cooperative living at Ash Street combines ownership, community, and convenience in a way that traditional housing rarely can. It’s more than just a place to live, it’s a shared investment in a community that values affordability, participation, and peace of mind.

If you’ve been searching for a home where you can take pride in ownership without the stress of constant upkeep, Ash Street Cooperative might be the perfect fit.
